The price of darkness is no longer with us. The late pioneer of heavy metal, Ozzy Osborne, tragically passed away on Tuesday, just weeks after performing his final show to a crowd in England, including the first performance of Black Sabbath in two decades. Two big pieces of news around Universal Music Group:

1) The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation into Universal Music Group‘s proposed acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings. The EC said it “has preliminary concerns that the transaction may allow UMG to reduce competition in the wholesale market for the distribution of recorded music in the European Economic Area (EEA) by acquiring commercially sensitive data of its rival record labels”.

2) UMG has confidentially submitted a Form F-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, “relating to a proposed public offering in the United States of the company’s ordinary shares held by certain shareholders”.

As high-stakes copyright lawsuits against Suno rumble on, the AI music generator has launched an update with what it claims to be “previously unimaginable capabilities” for “generative, studio-quality music creation”.
